Get out your Act IV/Act V questions. Let’s finish watching Hamlet!

 Homework:  Act IV and V homework questions: due tomorrow!  Work on Study Guide worksheet!  Study for your midterm!  Study classwork questions, homework questions and study guide questions.  The short response part will require you to have two examples per paragraph. Start preparing by finding evidence tonight!!!  You must discuss one theme  You must discuss character OR conflict  You must discuss either pun, metaphor, imagery, or allusions

STANDARDS Reading 3.1: Analyze characteristics of subgenres that are used in poetry, prose, plays, etc.

Let’s read the REAL ending to Hamlet, then discuss… 1. Out of Hamlet, Laertes and Fortinbras, which characters sought revenge and which characters renounced revenge? 2. Considering what happens to these three characters at the end of the story, what message (i.e. theme) do you think Shakespeare is trying to send about revenge?

 I’ll stamp Act IV/V homework!  Study for your midterm!  Study classwork questions, homework questions and study guide questions.  The short response part will require you to have two examples per paragraph. Start preparing by finding evidence tonight!!!  You must discuss one theme  You must discuss character OR conflict  You must discuss either pun, metaphor, imagery, or allusions

 Topic Sentence:  Address whatever question is given on the prompt; present the idea that you’ll prove in the rest of the paragraph.  Commentary:  Expand on or explain anything in the topic sentence that needs more commentary (definitions, clarifications, etc.)  Evidence:  Find a quote from the story that proves what you said in the topic sentence. Lead in to your quote and give an in- text citation.  Commentary:  Explain exactly how this quote reveals what you are trying to prove. Be specific/clear.

 Evidence:  Find a second quote from the story that proves what you said in the topic sentence. Lead in to your quote and give an in-text citation.  Commentary:  Explain how this quote proves your point.  Wrap-up:  Explain the bigger importance of what you are discussing (ex.: why it’s important for us to be aware of this theme, why it’s important to be aware of characters changing/staying the same, why Shakespeare included the metaphors, puns, imagery that he did, etc.)

You will have to write well-developed, well- organized paragraphs. Let’s review the paragraph format… ( Note : Taking notes might be helpful for you…)

Let’s take a look at a sample response paragraph…

Your short response questions will be about some of these different aspects of Hamlet: 1. Metaphors, Puns, Imagery, Allusions (know at least one well) 2. Asides or soliloquies (know at least one well) 3. Characters (know at least one type well) 4. Conflicts (know at least one type well) 5. Themes (know at least two themes well) To prepare… FIND EVIDENCE for each!!! Hint: put post-its in the book that you’ll use for the final (not the one under the desk) near the quotes you would like to use for each (2 quotes per term) and figure out the “bigger idea” behind the term (why it’s important in Hamlet).
