Triangles Javier Soto

Triangles There are 3 different types of triangles, but the one that we need to focus on for the GED is called the RIGHT TRIANGLE.

What’s so special about RIGHT TRIANGLES? Right triangles have exactly ONE right angle. It’s kind of like the corner of a square…you’ll know when you see it. This side is called “C” and it’s ALWAYS located in FRONT of the RIGHT ANGLE. The C side is ALWAYS the LONGEST side in a RIGHT TRIANGLE. Right angle

Pythagorean Relationship. This side, the one in front of the right angle, is ALWAYS going to be the longest side. It’s always going to be called “C”. Right angle This side can be called “A” or “B” This side can ALSO be called either “A” or “B”, it really doesn’t matter. What matters is knowing where “C” is. It is ALWAYS going to be in FRONT of the RIGHT ANGLE. C I’m right here!

Pythagorean Relationship: If we know this side is 3 And this side is 4 We can solve for this side! Right angle 4 3 a2a2 b C This side is called: + b2b2 = = c For example: This side is called: a a and b, or b and a. It doesn’t really matter, remember? Let’s plug in the numbers into the equation c 2

Pythagorean Relationship a2a2 + b2b2 = c2c = c2c2 Steps: 1.Remember the Pythagorean relationship. 2.Plug in the numbers (numbers that you got after identifying “c”). 3.SQUARE the numbers that were plugged in. 4.Add as necessary. 5.Get the SQUARE ROOT of the remaining number AND the remaining letter (in this case C). 6.THAT’S THE ANSWER! So let’s solve it! 3232 = = = c2c2 25 = c2c2 5 = √ √ √ = 5 c √ c When you’re trying to find the SQUARE ROOT of a number or letter that is being SQUARED, the SQUARE ROOT and the SQUARE will ALWAYS cancel out, leaving you only with the base number or letter = Operations:

CHECKLIS T! Make sure you learned the following concepts from this lesson. If you didn’t give the slide another look. If you did, take the quiz below! I know what a RIGHT TRIANGLE is. I know how to find “c” on a triangle. I know how to find side “a” and side “b” on a RIGHT TRIANGLE I know how to SOLVE for the missing side in a RIGHT TRIANGLE.
