PUNCTUATION MARKS! Punctuation marks such as periods, commas, and colons should appear after the (parenthesis). – According to some, dreams express "profound aspects of personality" (Name 184), though others disagree. – According to Name's study, dreams may express "profound aspects of personality" (184).

The sentence MUST make sense as if there are no quotation marks present! If you can read the sentence out loud without quotation marks and it makes sense, you’re okay! You are using the author’s words because they say it better than you can! Let them help you! REMEMBER…

GOOD! With quotes: According to Chris, “there are six thousand bugs in the forest.” Without quotes: According to Chris, there are six thousand bugs in the forest.

BAD! “There are 365 days in a year” (Taylor). Where are my words?! A QUOTE SHOULD NEVER FUNCTION AS ITS OWN SENTENCE!

If your quote it too long… If your quote is too long and you only want to use some of it, you need to use “…”. ELLIPSES! Example: – Quote: “The average speed of a bear is 6mph, the average speed of a jaguar is 10mph, and the average speed of a cactus is 0mph.” – Ellipses: “The average speed of a bear is 6mph…the average speed of a cactus is 0mph”

Quotes in Sentences! NEVER WRITE A QUOTE BY ITSELF! IT NEEDS TO BE A PART OF A SENTENCE! The quote can be in the beginning, middle, or end of the sentence!

Quotes in the Beginning! “The number of residents in Maryland is growing exponentially,” and people are scared (Haynes). FORMULA: “Quote” ( ) your own words.

Quotes in the Middle! According to some, dreams express "profound aspects of personality" (Name 184), though others disagree. FORMULA: Your words “Quote” ( ) your words

Quotes at the End! According to Haynes, “the fifth period English class is fantastic” (Haynes). FORMULA: Your own words “Quote” ( ).
