Curriculum as hegemony ECS210Winter 2105

Beginnings Review Commonsense ideas of curriculum Traditionalist / Re-conceptualist A Saskatchewan story… Hegemony (Thank-you Gramsci) “the dominance of one group over another” Not through overt force Rather through legitimating norms and ideas Hegemony describes how some ideas become the commonsense

Curriculum includes… Vision(s) for Education Curriculum is driven by, code for, and enshrines particular visions of the purpose of education. Vision(s) for what it means to be human Curriculum imagines and enacts particular visions of the kind of human beings society wants. “Goals of Education for Saskatchewan” (1985) (7 minutes) With a partner, discuss the following: 1.What visions for education do you see in this document? 2.What visions for what it means to be human do you see in this document?

Stakeholders In your pairs: 1.Make a list of the stakeholders in the development of curriculum 2.According to the commonsense, which stakeholders can be seen as ‘knowledgeable’?

Big Picture Curriculum is political Minister of education, ministry of education, technocrats, educators, school boards Business / Boards / Universities… Beliefs are more important than facts Sex Ed anyone? Ben Levin anyone?

Teachers?

Site: Formal Curriculum Official Documents: The Renewed Social Studies Curriculum Depth versus Breadth Outcomes & Indicators Gather in Groups of 4 Elect one member to come and get your work folder/materials 1 member should have a laptop or tablet device

Curriculum Critique Read through the Outcomes and Indicators for Social Studies. Consider: 1.What values and beliefs (i.e., ideologies) may guide the curriculum? 2.What conceptions of knowledge and learning seem to be supported? What curriculum orientation do they align with? Is this curriculum as product? Process? Praxis? In 20 minutes – be prepared to share some of your findings?

Blogging / Questions to Consider… Given the complex relationships between formal curricula, political power, and the social order, what agency do classroom teachers have in enacting curriculum?
