Relative Pronouns in relative clauses who /which /where/ when /whose

Which boy are you talking about? The boy is my brother. The relative pronouns (which, who, whom or that) refer to the noun (or noun phrase) before it. It is used to combine two sentences and omit repetition. Which boy are you talking about? The boy is my brother. He is wearing a cap. Oh I see! The boy who is wearing a cap is your brother.

Who The boy who is wearing a cap is my brother. What does it refer to?

I usually speak to the woman. She owns the hotel. I usually speak to the woman who owns the hotel. Use: to replace people *

which I have got a lovely dog. I have got a lovely dog which It has got white fur. I have got a lovely dog which has got white fur. Use: to replace things/animals *

WHERE Use: refers to place (house – room – park – street – town – city – hospital – school…) We stayed in a hotel. The hotel was very small. The hotel where we stayed was very small.

So, don’t forget we can combine sentences using: 1- Who to replace people ( the man, the doctor, …..) 2- which to replace things and animals ( car, dog, …) 3- where to replace places ( park, school, ….) 4- when to replace time expressions( day, summer, …) 5- Whose to replace possessives( his, my,….)
