ATIS Home Networking (HNET) Program DOCUMENT #:GSC13-GTSC6-13 FOR:Presentation SOURCE:Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions AGENDA ITEM:GTSC6; 4.3 CONTACT(S):Tim Jeffries, ATIS VP Technology and Business Development, Submission Date: July 1, 2008

Home Networking (HNET) was identified by the ATIS Board of Directors as a business priority with technical & operational impacts warranting study. ATIS commissioned a Focus Group in early 2008 to do the following associated with the deployment of IP-based Services in the HNET: –Develop a cohesive home networking infrastructure. –Provide an objective assessment of HNET initiatives currently underway in the industry. –Determine appropriate actions to address standard gaps. –Develop a work plan to advance the technical, operational, and strategic needs of ATIS Members. HNET – Current Activities

ATIS is currently working on the following: Developing a high-level, functional architecture to consider and bound all aspects of the HNET. Identifying and understanding the relevant interfaces between the HNET and the service provider. Assessing how relevant standards work maps to the HNET (building-blocks) to better assess existing vs. needed work. –33 unique groups have been identified that are currently conducting HNET standards activities. Assessing existing certification programs to identify possible gaps and the potential need for future certifications Discussing characteristics of those technologies likely to be used in the HNET. HNET - Current Activities

HNET – Strategic Direction Enable a quality consumer experience. Reduce/eliminate the need for costly “ truck-rolls. ” Identify actions to address challenges and gaps that if resolved would enhance revenue growth potentials. Better enable and support service providers to remotely maintain and manage the HNET, its devices, and services. Maximize the potentials of existing coax, telephone/ electrical wiring plus new optical and wireless technologies for the HNET. Enable the HNET as the 4 th carrier network (i.e., broadband core, metro, access, HNET).

HNET – Challenges There are 33 unique organizations developing HNET standards. Determining what (access) technologies to include and/or exclude in the standardization process for the HNET to ensure plug-n-play is challenging. Service providers and equipment vendors must be able to leverage HNET opportunities (e.g., products and services) into sustainable revenue generating business models. Enabling the delivery of a high quality user experience in a dynamic device and service rich environment.

HNET – Next Steps ATIS will continue its assessment and develop recommendations to deliver a cohesive HNET infrastructure. Where and when appropriate, initiate standards development and/or coordination to address technical gaps. ATIS will continue to communicate with industry to ensure business needs are addressed. ATIS targeted 4Q08 for the HNET-FG to complete its effort.
