Presentation transcript:

Regionalism Arose from the effort to depict the speech, manners, habits, history, and beliefs of a certain geographical area. Setting is vitally important in regional literature. Key elements of setting in regional literature are the following:  Geographical location/physical features. Ex: river, camp, etc.  The time of year (like a season or historical period)  The jobs and daily activities of the characters  The culture of the characters, including social and economic conditions in which they live.

Setting, characters, and plot are inseparable. There is a relationship between the characters and the setting. Writing was influenced by the end of the Civil War, country’s expansion, and industry’s growth. Grew out of Realism-type of writing that attempts to show ordinary lives without romance or sentimentality.

Voice The writer’s unique use of language. It allows the reader to hear the writer’s personality in his or her writing. Voice is established through diction and tone.
