Energy Flows Through Ecosystems Sun: Makes all energy on Earth. Producers: Make their own food. Consumers: Get their food by eating other organisms. Decomposers:
Organism. An individual animal, plant, or single- celled life form.
Within a food chain, some living things create the energy and some use the energy.

Essential Question Lesson 2 What are the roles of producers, consumers, and decomposers?

Any living thing that makes its own food is called a producer.

Plants use energy from sunlight to make food Plants use energy from sunlight to make food. Without the sub, plants would die.

Some animals eat plants Some animals eat plants. The energy stored in the plants is used by the animal’s body.

An animal that eats plants or other animals is called a consumer.

A consumer cannot make their own food. Three types of consumers: herbivore carnivore omnivore

An herbivore is an animal that eats only plants, or producers.

A carnivore is a living thing that eats animals.

An omnivore is an animal that eats both plants (producers) and animals (consumers).

A decomposer eats dead plants and animals - they also break down waste.

Decomposers are very helpful Decomposers are very helpful. Dead plants and animals would cover the earth without them.
