What is a mixed number? A mixed number is a number that contains both a whole number and a fraction. Example: 3 2 / 5
What is an improper fraction? An improper fraction is a fraction in which the numerator is greater than the denominator. (The top # is bigger than the bottom #.) Examples: 11 / 5, 7 / 1
What is a proper fraction? A proper fraction is a fraction in which the numerator is less than the denominator. Examples: 1 / 3, 8 / 9
Example 1: Write 15 / 2 as a mixed number. 15 / 2 means 15 ÷ 2 * Use long division * The remainder is the new numerator
Example 2: Write 2 1 / 5 as an improper fraction. 2 1 / 5 (work backwards) * multiply instead of divide 1. whole # times denominator 2. add the numerator to the product
