Organ System that forms a protective covering on the outside of the body

 Keeps water in your body  Keeps foreign particles out of your body  Allows you to feel things  Helps regulate body temperature  Gets rid of waste chemicals

 Melanin ◦ A chemical that determines skin color  Sweat Glands ◦ Help regulate body temperature and keep it cool ◦ Helps body get rid of waste chemicals.

 Epidermis: The surface layer of cells on a plant or animal ◦ Keratin: Helps make the skin tough  Dermis: The layer of skin below the epidermis ◦ Collagen: Provide skin strength and allow it to bend without tearing

 Protects skin from ultraviolet light  Keeps particles like dust and insects out of your eyes and nose  Regulates body temperature  Traps warm air around the body (acts like a jacket)

 Damage to the genetic material in skin cells can cause SKIN CANCER  Too much oil combined with dead skin cells and bacteria that clogs hair follicles can cause ACNE.
