Measurements EAR1

EAR1 73Ge(n,g)

73Ge(n,g) Measurement CERN-INTC-2013-021 / INTC-P-381 Sample: GeO2 enriched in 73Ge (2000 g elemental weight): Powder sample was prepared as stable 2 cm diameter cylinder at PSI (S. Heinitz) Measurement with 4 C6D6 detectors (2xB6D6, 2xL6D6) 11. February 2015 49th INTC Meeting

73Ge(n,g) Measurement CERN-INTC-2013-021 / INTC-P-381 Good signal to background ratio for this measurement. Unknown resonances already observed in the data, in comparison with ENDF/B-VII. counts/bin/proton (unweighted) ✓First 73Ge(n,g) measurement over full neutron energy range! L6D6 detectors showed non-linearity in calibrations => to be investigated during this winter shutdown. 11. February 2015 49th INTC Meeting

EAR1 171Tm(n,g)

171Tm(n,g) Measurement CERN-INTC-2014-003 / INTC-P-404 171Tm sample (300 mSv/h at 40cm): Isotope production @ILL: 171Tm: 170Er(n,g)171Er (b-, 7.5h)171Tm (enrichment 1.8%) → 3.6 mg of 171Tm (1.9 y) [1.3x1019 atoms] Chemical separation @PSI: Final comp.: 171Tm (97.9%) + 169Tm (2.1%) + 170Tm(0.07%) Sample preparation @PSI: PCB frame (50 mm diameter) Mylar (5 mm) Aluminum (7 mm) backing 171Tm deposit (20 mm diameter) Sketch Assembly mounted 11. February 2015 49th INTC Meeting

171Tm(n,g) Measurement CERN-INTC-2014-003 / INTC-P-404 Measurement with 4 B6D6 detectors. Sample activity dominates below 500 keV deposited energy. Gain-drift of the detectors due to the activity of the sample observed – regular calibrations were performed during the campaign. Resonances were observed up to 800 eV (limited statistics). Above 1 keV background dominating -> no resonances observed. 1 MeV 10 keV 100 eV 1 eV ✓First ever 171Tm(n,g) measurement successful! 11. February 2015 49th INTC Meeting

Measurements EAR2

EAR2 240Pu(n,f)

240Pu(n,f) Measurement CERN-INTC-2014-051 / INTC-P-418 Measurement during Phase 2 in EAR1 not successful: Detector deterioration over time (2 years!). Spontaneous fission rate – dominant in sub-threshold region. New measurement in EAR2: Higher flux = shorter measurement time. Shorter time window per pulse = signals dominate over spontaneous fission. Samples from IRMM: Three 240PuO2 (99.89%) deposits of 3 cm diameter on 0.25 mm Al backing: 25.7 MBq Reference samples: 235U (~90mg/cm2) 238U (~110mg/cm2) 240Pu 238Pu 0.0733% 239Pu 0.0144% 99.8915% 241Pu 0.00041% 242Pu 0.02027% 244Pu 0.000046% Total mass 3.1mg Activity 25.7MBq Surface density 0.10 – 0.13 mg/cm2 11. February 2015 49th INTC Meeting

240Pu(n,f) Measurement CERN-INTC-2014-051 / INTC-P-418 Measurement with MGAS detectors. Good a-FF separation. Small, manageable gain loss observed (8 days). Many resonances visible in sub- threshold region. (2000 bins per energy decade) 240Pu L = 19.2m ✓ 240Pu(n,f) measurement successful in EAR2! 11. February 2015 49th INTC Meeting

EAR2 7Be(n,a) Test Measurement

7Be(n,a) Test Measurement CERN-INTC-2014-049 / INTC-P-417 EAR2 Study of (possible) degradation of the detector performance. Sandwich of Silicon detectors (140 mm, 3x3 cm2). LiF converter (105 mg/cm2) on mylar foil. Installed at the lower part of the beam dump in EAR2. triton alpha ✓ No significant degradation observed! 11. February 2015 49th INTC Meeting
