Lesson 5 Career Success Toolboxes Tent Cards JA Career Success

Lesson 5 Session 5 Know Your Work Priorities JA Career Success

Lesson 5 How do you know what kind of job or career you want to pursue? What is your work environment? The surroundings in a place of work, including physical and social conditions and other factors, that affect the quality of the job experience. JA Career Success – Know Your Work Priorities

Lesson 5 What are your priorities and what’s important to you? Once you know your priorities, you plan what kind of job you want and then what education and training is needed. Companies also want you to know your priorities because they want employees who want their jobs. They spend a lot of time and money recruiting and training employees so if the employee do not like some aspect of the job and quits, the company just wasted a lot of time and money on that employee and will need to recruit and train another employee. JA Career Success – Know Your Work Priorities

Lesson 5 Activity: Priority Setting Part 1: I Would Rather (10 min) Distribute Personal Priority Card Sheet to each student Form teams of 2 Read each “I would rather:” and then discuss which options seems better. Each student circle your choice on your own card. JA Career Success – Know Your Work Priorities

Lesson 5 Activity: Priority Setting Part 2: Prioritizing Distribute Priority Triangle to each student. Turn the Priority Triangle to Side One Separate the “I would rather” Personal Priority Cards Put each “I would rather” card on either “High Priority” or “Low Priority” for your future work. Then move the 2 piles of cards off the triangle (High Priority left and Low Priority right of the triangle). JA Career Success – Know Your Work Priorities

Lesson 5 Activity: Priority Setting Part 2: Prioritizing Turn to Side Two Choose the “I would rather” card from their High Priority pile and rank them 1 to 10 with 1 being the highest priority. Put them onto the boxes on the Priority Triangle. Remove the top 3 cards and then write these priorities directly on the boxes numbered 1 to 3 at the top of the triangle, as a reminder to help them focus their career search. JA Career Success – Know Your Work Priorities

Lesson 5 Discussion: It is important to keep these priorities in mind as you make choices that will affect your future. For example, if having financial security is important, that likely means you will need training or education so you can get a job that will pay well. Review your priorities periodically to be sure you are still pursuing what is most important to you. JA Career Success – Know Your Work Priorities

Lesson 5 Quotes: One way to keep a goal in mind is to find a quote that inspires you and can serve as a reminder of your top priority. Distribute Quote Stickers to teams of 4 -5 students. Students read through the quotes and each student takes one sticker that best matches your own personal priorities. Put the sticker onto the Career Success Toolbox. Can take additional stickers – put them on the Priority Triangle. JA Career Success – Know Your Work Priorities

Lesson 5 Career Success Toolbox:  This is session 5, put the and Priority Cards and Priority Triangle into your Toolbox.  On the front, under 5., place your favorite quote sticker.  Put table tent into your Toolbox.  Collect Toolbox. JA Career Success – Know Your Work Priorities
