MARK’S GOSPEL ABOUT JESUS

JESUS, THE SAVIOR FOR ALL PEOPLE

MARK’S GOSPEL ABOUT JESUS Mark 2:13-17: “Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him, and he began to teach them. As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector's booth. "Follow me," Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.

MARK’S GOSPEL ABOUT JESUS While Jesus was having dinner at Levi's house, many tax collectors and "sinners" were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the "sinners"

MARK’S GOSPEL ABOUT JESUS and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: "Why does he eat with tax collectors and 'sinners'?" On hearing this, Jesus said to them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."

MARK’S GOSPEL ABOUT JESUS I. WHO YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE LIKE.

MARK’S GOSPEL ABOUT JESUS Why were these Pharisees so out of sync with the purpose of God? They were listening to the religious culture they had been brought up in rather than listening to the Spirit of God teaching them the will of God.

MARK’S GOSPEL ABOUT JESUS II. WHO YOU WANT TO BE LIKE

MARK’S GOSPEL ABOUT JESUS Verse 17: “On hearing this, Jesus said to them, ‘It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.’” Jesus was saying that it would be just as ridiculous for Him to not go to the most sinful people as it would for a doctor not to go and help the sick during an epidemic!

MARK’S GOSPEL ABOUT JESUS III. DON’T OVERLOOK THE RESULTS!

MARK’S GOSPEL ABOUT JESUS Matthew wrote a gospel about Jesus Christ that was chosen by the Holy Spirit as inspired and true and worthy of being saved for all generations for all time.

MARK’S GOSPEL ABOUT JESUS Brian Morgan: “To the degree that we act like Pharisees we are thwarting God’s saving work. For this, Jesus would give us no mild rebuke. His actions radically redefine God’s people, and his proverb redefines who is in and who is out. If religion merely means that we are separate, and that’s all it means, then we are out!

MARK’S GOSPEL ABOUT JESUS The church is not the place where we separate from all that is unclean to remain holy; it is the place where we expose our sickness to become holy. The church is not a monastery; it is an emergency room.

MARK’S GOSPEL ABOUT JESUS Jesus calls on our church to be an emergency room. Our present religious culture calls on our church to be a monastery. Who are we going to listen to?
