Organ Systems

Some interesting body facts…. Heat released by the human body in one hour can boil 5 liters of water in one hour. Our eyes blink in order to clean tears and moisture from the eye balls so that we can see clearly. Blinking also is a reflex action that protects the eyes. If something is thrown at your eyes you will immediately blink. We die of hunger after 9 days because our stomach digests itself. The strongest and the sturdiest muscle of the human body is the tongue. At the time of birth, babies don't have knee caps. Knee caps grow gradually and they are there by the age 2.

Major Organ Systems

Integumentary System Covers your body and protects the tissue underneath Includes: skin, hair, and nails

Muscular System Works with the skeletal system to help you move –1. Skeletal muscle: helps bones move –2. Smooth muscle: moves food –3. Cardiac muscle: pumps blood

Skeletal System Provides a frame to support and protect your body parts Includes: bones, cartilage, and connective tissue

Cardiovascular/ Circulatory System Pumps blood through all of your blood vessels Includes: heart, blood, and blood vessels –3 kinds of blood vessels: 1. Arteries: takes blood away from your heart 2. Veins: takes blood to the heart 3. Capillaries: allows things to leave your blood and get to body cells

Respiratory System Takes in oxygen and releases carbon dioxide Includes: nose, throat, and lungs

Nervous System Receives and sends electrical messages throughout your body Includes: brain, spinal cord, and nerves

Digestive System Breaks down food you eat into nutrients that your body can absorb Includes: mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and liver Where does digestion begin???
