The Pinhole Camera

The concept of Camera Obscura was known for many years but could not be ‘captured’. The ancient Greeks used a technique like Camera Obscura to map the stars. The ancient Chinese used it as early 300 A.D. Today, it is still used mainly for its magical qualities for re-creating a scene using virtually nothing more than the physical properties of light an a ‘Dark Chamber” Where it came from:

The pinhole camera is a light tight box with a small hole on one side. The media, (light sensitive material, either film or photographic paper) is placed inside. When exposed a photographic negative will result inside the box on the photographic media. A pinhole camera can be made from anything….like a cardboard box, paint can or even an eggshell.

The Pinhole camera is a holdover from the past. It still contains mystery as to just why and how it works. Just Google pinhole camera and find all sorts of websites regarding them.

It is the most basic of cameras Pinholes are popular because : They can be cheap. The give the photographer a lot of creative freedom, and the give a ghostly, almost other world effect.

They can be done in color or in B&W, whatever photographic medium you wish….as long as you can stand the long shutter speed.

Notice the sharpness….this is done with only a small, needle size hole …amazing

Movement is the enemy of the Pinhole, however it can create interesting effects.

Another technique that is fun is making a ghost image by timing the exposure correctly you can affectively become semi-transparent. Very cool.

 They are slow in comparison to other cameras, usually taking many seconds to make an image depending on the medium you are using.  During these long exposures you must keep the camera perfectly still so this type of photography is not good for anything with action involved. It cannot be handheld.  Keeping the camera light tight is challenging. The drawback to Pinhole cameras:
