Project Management Plan Howard Community College Canvas Training Course Instructional Designer Ruddhi Wadadekar Presented to The Dean: Teaching and Learning Institute Howard Community College August 9, 2013

PURPOSE OVERVIEW  Review project objectives  Review project status  Identify resources  Present schedule of tasks  Discuss challenges and recommendations  Obtain approval needed for resources to complete the project from the dean of TLI and stakeholders  Obtain the funding from the finance department (HCC)

Project Objective The Canvas Training Course is designed for the faculty at Howard Community College. This is a four week online training course that covers all the basics of Canvas learning management system

Additional resources  Howard Community College (HCC) has already set up Instructure Canvas as primary learning management system.  A contact personnel at Instructure Canvas for technical issues  HCC’s web-site designer to upload and link Canvas to different academic divisions.  Administrative assistants from different departments to populate students’ list on Canvas.

Schedule of tasks

Week 1 &2Week 3&4Week 5&6Week 7&8Week 9 (Review) Program director Meets with the team to discuss the project outline and time frame - - Meets with the team to see the final course design Instructional Designer (ID) Discusses the course modules with SME and creates a blueprint for four modules Starts creating course modules Starts populating the Canvas course shell with course modules Finishes updating all the modules Evaluates the final product and submit to the director of TLI Subject matter expert (SME) Researches and discusses the course content to be included. create custom training guide for the course Create quizzes for each module Reviews all the material before its uploaded on the course site, updates if required. Canvas technician -- Starts populating the Canvas course shell with course modules Adds hyperlinks, PowerPoint and videos to course modules Create and add quizzes on canvas Tests all the links, videos, and PowerPoint Graphic and AV designers - - Convert the custom guide for Canvas into PowerPoint, videos and pdf files Create surveys on external sites such as survey monkeys and ispring Tests all the links, surveys and graphics and audio. Testers--- Test the final course design and complete the test survey

Challenges Issue: Creating a custom guidebook Canvas does not have a text book. The project team will have to create a custom book for this course. Subject matter expert must discuss with the instructional designer about the course contents, design of modules and plan the custom book accordingly. Issue: Creating lessons accessible to all Some faculty members require special training lessons (eg: American sign languages faculty require videos with closed captioning). Instructional designer must co-ordinate with graphics and audio visual designers to create special needs course material

Challenges Issue: Technology support Many faculty members do not use advanced technology in teaching. Many faculty members are not familiar with cloud based technology.

Recommendations Creating a custom guidebook Subject matter expert can create a custom guidebook for Canvas, which will be also available online for HCC students A cheat sheet will be created which will be a quick guide to Canvas Creating lessons accessible to all Closed captioned videos, PDF PowerPoint slides for easy printing, a cheat sheet on basics of Canvas will be helpful.

Recommendations Technology support A team of experts in technology will provide support to the faculty in need. This will ease the learning process for those who face technology challenges.

Summary  The course design will be completed in 8 weeks + 1 review week once its approved by the dean of TLI and stakeholders and after finalizing all resources and funds.  The recommendations for the challenges are to create a custom electronic guide book for this training course, to create a PDF version of the guidebook and a video with closed captioning is useful for the faculty with special needs and to provide technical support to the faculty.
