Soldiers Begin to go Home

Why did Soldiers begin leaving the war? Especially for Southern soldiers, they knew they had families suffering at home. For many, loyalty to their struggling family pulled harder than their loyalty to the Confederacy. They began to desert (leave) their posts and make their way home.

How did it happen in NC? Soldiers from North Carolina left in especially large numbers. This was because NC families were hit the hardest by the war. By the end of the war, North Carolina had more soldiers in the military than ANY other state!

How did the Anaconda Plan play a role? Because the Anaconda Plan cut off Southern supplies, the South was forced to tax its people even heavier. This slowly led to families being unable to support, or even feed themselves. Many soldiers had no choice but to come home and help.

Who were the “Heroes of America”? The Heroes of America was a secret group formed in North Carolina that was pro-Union (on the Union’s side). This group provided shelter and aid to NC soldiers who were trying to go home. The group also gave “draft dodgers” a place to stay.

How were the mountains used? Some Southern deserters who didn’t have families were just trying to escape the war. Many men headed for the mountains, where they would hide in caves and eventually try and escape to Union territory.

How were mountain families impacted? Families living in the NC mountains often were victims of theft, and in bad cases, murder. Southern soldiers leaving the war were usually hungry, angry, and needed supplies, and would do crazy things in attempts to get them.
