Welcome Thank you for your participation! ** Did you sign up for the door prize??? ** Special thanks for Jennie Winters (ROE) for guidance and assistance with D-112 Common Core Standards transition

Overview and Welcomes Please introduce yourself:) Development of Common Core Standards –Mathematics –Language Arts –Science Timeline of Illinois implementation Assessment District 112 process Implications and Considerations

How the Common Core Movement began.. ISAT and $$$ Not a Federal Initiative PARCC - SMART- Review the Common Core Site ( ISBE site & gap analysis University of Missouri analysis States working together Who has not joined?

Goal of the CCSS The Illinois State Board of Education adopted new Math and ELA standards for K-12 education aligned to college and career readiness. ISBE Goal #1 Every student will demonstrate academic achievement and be prepared for success after high school.

Why are a Common Set of Standards Important? Preparation: These standards are designed for students to be college and career ready upon completing their secondary education. Quality: Teachers are given more flexibility to teach standards in depth and across disciplines that can be tailored to fit student needs. Skilled workforce: These standards emphasize skills and application,in addition to content, to prepare students for working in the current workforce.

Why are a Common Set of Standards Important? Clarity: The standards are designed to help teachers, students, and parents understand what is expected of them to be ready to enter the workforce or college. Consistency: These standards will level the playing field so all student will be held to the same rigorous expectations. Global Society: The standard are internationally benchmarked to high performing countries to help our students succeed in a global economy.

Standards from individual high performing countries and provinces were used to inform content, structure, and language. Writing teams looked for examples of rigor, relevance, coherence and progression Mathematics 1.Belgium 2.Canada 3.China 4.Chinese Taipei 5.England 6.Finland 7.Hong Kong 8.India 9.Ireland 10.Japan 11.Korea 12.Singapore English Language Arts 1.Australia 2.Canada 3.England 4.Finland 5.Hong Kong 6.Ireland 7.Singapore

What are College and Career Readiness Standards? Students will… Demonstrate independence Strong content knowledge Respond to varying demands of audience, tasks, purpose, and discipline Comprehend as well as critique Value evidence Use technology and digital media- strategically and capably Come to understand other perspectives and cultures

What it is….. Fresh Start A chance to get it right Look at OUR habits of mind CCSS is not a new program but a next step A Global Benchmark A solid, consistent base And for the first time… We are not building the plane….. AS WE ARE FLYING!!!

What it does not define.. Interventions Teaching methodology Sequence A specific program to support the CCSS Federal mandate

Timeline for Implementation : Awareness : Awareness : Pilot : Full implementation

Science Common Core Standards released June Timeline: : :

District 112 Math Process PowerStandards have provided excellent starting point Kindergarten and first grade have converted Slow and methodical (think ) Build staff awareness systematically Build a core group of grade level experts Mastery Continuum evolves more systematically Identifying the gaps –Consistently, continually, vertically, horizontally

Remember the C.I.A.! C urriculum: PowerStandards (which will align with CCSS and Illinois) I nstruction: Teacher’s creativity, methods, pedagogy and choice of program A ssessment: Formative & Summative

Flexibility and Knowledge Situation is fluid This conversion requires thorough understanding of the CCSS and D-112 PowerStandards Promise of the CCSS: “they will allow research on learning progressions to inform and improve the design of the standard…States must work together to build”

Overview of Math Standards The K-8 Math standards are organized by Domain, Clusters, and Standards. Domain: overarching ides that connect topics across the grade levels. Clusters: Demonstrate the grade by grade progression of task complexity. Standards: Define what a students should be able to know and do at that grade level.

High School Organized by conceptual bands Focus on using math and solving messy problems, similar to what students would see in the real world Problem solving and communication emphasized Mathematical practices are recommended which cut across learning K-12

Mathematical Skill is based on…… Procedural Skill Processes “Plug and Chug” Summon up mnemonic device Mathematical understanding Student who can explain where the answer and formula came from Conceptual knowledge to understand the procedural skill Making the real-world connections

Why Mathematical Understanding? Without Mathematical understanding.  Student’s knowledge base is fragile  Retention of information is weak

CCSS Mathematical Practices 1.Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 2.Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3.Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 4. Model with mathematics. 5.Use appropriate tools strategically. 6.Attend to precision. 7.Look for and make use of structure. 8.Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Overview of K- Mathematics Standards K-5 standards provide students with a solid foundation in whole numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication division, fractions and decimals. 6-8 describe robust learning in geometry, algebra, and probability and statistics. Modeled after the focus of standards from high-performing nations, the standards for grades 7-8 include significant algebra and geometry content. Students who completed 7th and master the content and skills will be prepared fro algebra in 8th grade or after.

Target of the Math standards is college and career readiness for all students Focus in nearly grades on numbers and numerations and the relationship to operations to build a solid foundation in math Establish key concepts leading to basic algebraic readiness by eighth grade Develop geometric concepts in the middle grades YES.. This is an ALGEBRA for ALL l initiative!!

Implications + Considerations Communication is key Need to develop awareness Review of program materials Transfer of responsibility Digital child Clear understanding of curriculum Assessment training Differentiation training Sequence of prior learning is essential Evaluation of how much time is devoted to Math
