AIR IS EVERYWHERE TÜLAY AKAOĞLU METU Development Foundation School Science Teaching Project

ODTU Development Foundation School/ Science Teaching Project/ SCIENCE ACTIVITIES IN K-3 Foundation school associated with METU. Science activities are performed in K-3. Activities  are prepared with the collaboration of classroom teachers.  are integrated into “Life Science” Course.  are based on hands-on experiments  develop positive attitude towards science

TITLE : Air is Everywhere GRADE LEVEL : 2 nd grade Free programme in every two weeks ODTU Development Foundation School/ Science Teaching Project/ OBJECTIVES : Students, -realize that air occupies space -compare air with other matters -explore how to trap air in a container. -use ruler to measure height -compare and contrast measured quantities -use the terms “low” and “high”appropriately

ODTU Development Foundation School/ Science Teaching Project/ Fill half of the beaker with water. How can you raise the level of water?

ODTU Development Foundation School/ Science Teaching Project/ Draw the materials on the blackboard. Describe the materials. Tell the students that they can use all or some of the materials. How can you raise the level of water with air?

ODTU Development Foundation School/ Science Teaching Project/ Group the students. Group members discuss and try to suggest a method to raise the level of water with air. Students write a description of the method on a paper. Each group selects a member as a presenter. The presenter orally explains the method to the whole class.

ODTU Development Foundation School/ Science Teaching Project/ All the suggested methods are tested and checked whether they are successfull or not.

ODTU Development Foundation School/ Science Teaching Project/ Blow directly into water. No increase.

ODTU Development Foundation School/ Science Teaching Project/ No increase.

ODTU Development Foundation School/ Science Teaching Project/ Successfull !

ODTU Development Foundation School/ Science Teaching Project/ No increase.

ODTU Development Foundation School/ Science Teaching Project/ Successfull !

ODTU Development Foundation School/ Science Teaching Project/ Next Activity Show a plastic glass to the students. How can you raise the level of water with this plastic glass?

ODTU Development Foundation School/ Science Teaching Project/ Determine the number of students suggesting to dip the glass straight and upside down. or it does not matter! Announce the result to the students.

ODTU Development Foundation School/ Science Teaching Project/ Testing Dip the glass into the water in both ways.

ODTU Development Foundation School/ Science Teaching Project/ The students would experience that their suggestions may not be consistent with the results of the experiment.

ODTU Development Foundation School/ Science Teaching Project/ The air in the glass caused an increase at the level of water. What is necessary to do in order not to raise the water level that much?

ODTU Development Foundation School/ Science Teaching Project/

How can we transfer the trapped air in the glass to another container? Next Activity

ODTU Development Foundation School/ Science Teaching Project/

AIR IS IN THE BUBBLE !

ODTU Development Foundation School/ Science Teaching Project/ Students, -Observe -Measure -Predict -Hypothesize -Model -Analyze -Communicate -Compare -Contrast

ODTU Development Foundation School/ Science Teaching Project/ Thank you!
