Strategies for Child-Focused TA Provided by State Deaf-Blind Projects Sam Morgan Peggy Malloy Elizabeth Bell nationaldb.org The contents of this presentation were developed under a grant from the U.S. Department of Education #H326T However, those contents do not necessarily represent the policy of the Teaching Research Institute, nor the US Department of Education, and you should not assume endorsement by the Federal Government. Project Officer, Jo Ann McCann.

Welcome and Overview Purpose of today’s webinar: Review new(ish) product--Implementing Evidence-Based Practices for Children Who Are Deaf-Blind: A TA Reference Guide – What it is – Why it was developed – A quick tour – Development process (and how you can help) – Related TA

What It Is Applies current implementation science knowledge to the work of state deaf- blind projects Will (hopefully) provide helpful information for planning and conducting child- focused TA

What It Is (Layout is a Series of Tables)

Implementation Science Implementation science = the study of how to enhance the capacity of practitioners to use effective practices TA strategies are an important (but under- researched) part of this field of study

Implementation Science Ongoing efforts to translate implementation science findings into practical recommendations State Implementation and Scaling-Up of Evidence-Based Practices (SISEP) Center – Charge is to “help establish implementation and scaling capacity in state, regional, and district educational systems”

Why the Guide Was Developed To convey information provided by SISEP and other sources in a way that makes it more applicable to the deaf-blind TA network. – IS literature focuses primarily on expanding the use of evidence-based practices with large, homogeneous groups – The population of children who are deaf-blind is obviously much different.

Implementation Support for Teams Key differences between efforts for children who are deaf-blind and large-scale implementation efforts: 1.Smaller scope (typically focusing on a single team) 2.State project personnel serve as external experts

Implementation Support for Teams Potential uses of this guide for the network: – Provide a common vocabulary and conceptual organization – Inform practice – Share and organize resources and tools – Define how national and state TA intersect – Help orient new TA providers to the field – Share what we know to benefit other disciplines

A Guided Tour Navigation Use of phases of implementation Formatting Elements Content Special thanks to: – Maurice Belote – Stacy Aguilera – Julie Durando – Lisa Lawter – Mellanie Lee – Emma Nelson – Emily Taylor-Snell – Everyone who provided feedback at DB Summit – Everyone who shared tools and resources

Key Points The guide is meant to be informative, not prescriptive Arranged by implementation phases, but in real life the phases overlap and may be repeated

Development Process (Ongoing) ActivityHow You Can Help Literature review & synthesisRecommend relevant resources Solidify & adapt information to make it a good fit for the network Provide feedback and advice as you review and use the guide Augment with resources and toolsContribute useful tools that can be linked or let us know of tools and resources that should be developed Create a public productLet us know about ease of use and share ideas for future formatting TA & DLet us know what you need with respect to TA regarding use of the guide

Technical Assistance on the Guide Topical webinars organized by implementation phase Drop in conversations on TA topics of interest to the network Peer-to-peer TA based on shared TA tools and processes Expanded tool and resource sharing on State Portal
