State Technologies Advancement Collaborative (STAC) Status Report Current Field Study Stellar Processes and Ecotope March 9, 2016

Slide 1November 13, 2003Interim Overview STAC Overview Goals u Study heat pump and air conditioning efficiency u Develop user-friendly test protocols. u Develop installation protocols and training. — Demonstrate use of short-term datalogger to verify installation.

Slide 2November 13, 2003Interim Overview Current Status u Six sites are under monitoring, although installation missed the cooling season at three sites. (One site withdrew.) u Three locations are equipped with redundant data loggers to prove short-term loggers. u Short-term procedures under development will allow technicians to verify proper installation with minimal data requirements. u Systems are providing useful data; analysis procedures are being checked in the field. u Bi-monthly data reports are posted to the website. (

Slide 3November 13, 2003Interim Overview Current Issues u One site has been withdrawn. u Three of six sites demonstrate poor performance. — One site shows high consumption during defrost but overall good performance.

Slide 4November 13, 2003Interim Overview Example – Site 4 Example of good performance (Moses Lake) Compressor heating down to cold temperatures High COPs

Slide 5November 13, 2003Interim Overview Example – Site 4 Monitoring is able to report consumption by operation mode. Isolating defrost mode has been difficult to achieve. In this case, defrost is subsumed within “Compressor plus Resistance Heat”.

Slide 6November 13, 2003Interim Overview Example – Site 4 Average hourly profile shows time-of-day.

Slide 7November 13, 2003Interim Overview Example – Site 4 Binned performance is based on full heating cycle, that is, including defrost, duty cycling etc.

Slide 8November 13, 2003Interim Overview Example – Site 4 Typical bi-monthly monitoring summary. Duty Fraction kWhkWCycles/DayCOP Fan: Circ.0% Fan: Therm.2% Cooling0%00.000NA C. Heating31% R. Heating0% C+R. Heat0% Defrost0%00.00 Min/Ave/Max OATemp: Deg.F. Data Capture / Total:100%

Slide 9November 13, 2003Interim Overview Performance Problems u Sites performing well – COP better than 2.2 Moses Lake Deer Island u Adequate performance – COP of 2 Boise – excessive defrost energy u Poor Performance – COP less than 2 Bend – incorrect TXV? Ashton – numerous installation problems, short duty cycles Shelton – low temperature split

Slide 10November 13, 2003Interim Overview Excessive Defrost Energy One site shows excessive defrost energy.

Slide 11November 13, 2003Interim Overview Excessive Defrost Length Defrost events often last longer than needed.

Slide 12November 13, 2003Interim Overview Excessive Defrost Power Defrost power levels are very high.

Slide 13November 13, 2003Interim Overview Supplemental Resistance

Slide 14November 13, 2003Interim Overview Site Comparison -- Heating

Slide 15November 13, 2003Interim Overview Site Comparison -- Cooling

Slide 16November 13, 2003Interim Overview Low Thermal Load for Some Sites

Slide 17November 13, 2003Interim Overview Next Steps u Encourage repairs to poorly performing systems. u Continue to collect cooling season data. u Verify short-term approach. — Current field work has identified some hardware issues with temp sensors.
