Civil War and Reconstruction

 Fancy word for a draft

 The amendment that officially made slavery illegal

 Period of time after the Civil War when the U.S. was rebuilding

 Wanting drastic change

 The amendment that says anyone born in the U.S. are citizens and are guaranteed equal protection of the laws

 The amendment that gave black people the right to vote

 White Southerners (usually poor) who joined the Republican party

 Northerners who moved to the South after the war

 Special tax people in the South had to pay in order to vote

 People could be exempt from poll tax and literacy test if their father or grandfather could vote before 1867

 Laws that segregated the blacks and the whites

 Court case that said segregation was allowed if “separate-but-equal” facilities were provided for African Americans
