Fotheringhay By Sarah McNamee && Shannen Finan Year 7 Lodge Park Technology College, Corby

What was it like ? Fotheringhay was very small and regularly quiet. Fotheringhay is not busy it is a quiet village which mostly old people live there. It is a very historic place with loads of places to visit.

The church… The church was built in 1434.It is called the church of St Mary. The church has been shrunken through the years. People are buried in the church and outside. The church is actually a really good size for a church and is still well used today. There used to be a college behind the church but the church was rebuilt and the college was moved.

Old inn On southern side of road. The inns provided accommodation for guests to the castle. Opposite on northern side of road ‘New inn’ New Inn

The castle… The castle was built in the 12th century by Simon de Senlis. The castle was acquired in 1377 and rebuilt and enlarged by the Dukes of York. Richard III was born here in 1452 but after his death at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485 the castle and estate became the residence of a succession of Tudor Queens. Its major claim to fame is as the trial and execution site of Mary Queen of Scots in The castle was razed pulled down in 1627.

What is Fotheringhay like today? Fotheringhay is quite a small village, and is also very quiet and peaceful. It is a linear settlement. There are lots of people buried in the church but they must be quite rich and important as you had to pay to be buried in the church.

What was Fotheringhay like in the past? Fotheringhay was a busy, important settlement – the bridge was an important river crossing, there were Inns. Kings and queens were born here. Mary Queen Of Scots was beheaded here. There was a college, a castle, a beautiful church. It is famous because Mary Queen Of Scots was beheaded here.
