1. CHINA, NOW 2000 years in a nutshell The olden days Dynasties1911MaoToday

“It doesn‘t matter if a cat is black or white, so long as it catches mice.” 黄 猫 、黑 猫,只 要 捉 住 老 鼠 就 是 好 猫 邓小平 DENG XIAOPING ( )

2. YOU CAN Simple economics of teaching english Hu Jintao Xi Jinping onwards THE GAME CHANGED HERE

SOME FACTS  A minimum 1,35 billion people with over 50 cities inhabitant by at least 5 million souls. Urbanization is around 54, 7%, drastically less than other Asian countries like South Korea or Singapore (92 and 100%). But also a lot less than most Western countries, even the bigger ones like Canada (+/- 82%). All of this happened within this present generation.  Exponential growth of the GNB per inhabitant: 2500 USD (2000) – 5000 usd (2005) – usd (2010) – (2015)  Traditionally, education is highly valued in chinese society and families often consider their children academic career, the second most important expense, only preceded by food.  As of 2013, China had the lowest percentage of foreign population, in the whole world.  English proficiency is still under 50%, even if most of the students start learning in elementary school and many of them will go abroad for their higher education. They are in many english-speaking countries, by far the largest international group on university campuses.

RESULT? A BIG POPULATION + QUICK URBANIZATION + QUICKLY GETTING RICHER + PEOPLE VALUE EDUCATION + PEOPLE NEED TO SPEAK MORE ENGLISH + PEOPLE DO NOT SPEAK ENGLISH + THERE ARE NOT MANY WAYS TO GET IT = DEMAND FOR FOREIGN ENGLISH TEACHERS COMPETITION THE OFFER HAS NOT YET REACHED THE DEMAND

3. THE JOB Now reality  The public and the private sector The difference  From kingergarden to academies and universities Not a question of salary  Different cities, different contexts It’s all about the tier!

Choosing a city: finding the tier is important for you BeijingShanghai Guangzhou (Canton) Shenzhen TOP DO I WANT TO REMAIN AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE TO MY PREVIOUS LIFESTYLE? DO I WANT TO BE ABLE TO GO OUT TO PUBS AND BUY WESTERN FOOD RELATIVELY EASILY? DO I WANT TO LEARN CHINESE? DO I WANT TO HAVE AN ADVENTURE IN CHINA? DO I WANT TO EXPERIENCE SOMETHING MORE THAN JUST EXPATRIATION? AM I MORE OF AN URBAN PERSON? WHAT’S THE FOOD LIKE?

4. You obtain a tourist visa. You do not necessarily need a sponsor. You can enter China and find a job yourself. The wanderer You obtain a M visa (business-class) Visa through an agent willing to sponsor you. This makes the process easier. The contractor You obtain a Z visa through your school’s reference letter, medical examination and background verification. The Expat
