Instead of writing about it, let’s think, pair, share: At the end of the book, Scout and Atticus are reading a book. When done, Scout summarizes the book to Atticus by saying, “’Atticus, when they finally saw him, why he hadn’t done any of those things… Atticus, he was real nice.’” Atticus replies, “’Most people are, Scout, when you finally see them.’” (Lee 281). 1. What person or group of people do you know in the real world that has been pre-judged? 2. How does Atticus’ statement apply to them?

 Boo Radley from To Kill a Mockingbird is a white man. However, the way that the society views him connects to the way that we prejudge other people as well.  Boo Radley represents racial minorities since both Boo and racial minorities are often misjudged or misunderstood.  Racial minorities = races that are not the majority of the population in a country or area.

 Society today has become much less racist since the 1930’s society of To Kill a Mockingbird.  What proof can you think of to show how racism has been ameliorated since the 1930’s?

 One of the biggest proofs we have that racism has gotten better in the past century is the fact that the U.S. (one of the most powerful countries in the world) now has a black president.  However, having a black president may often lead to the false impression that racism is no longer present in the lives of U.S. citizens.

 After Obama's election, two images of America appeared: 1. An accepting America that threw off its long history of slavery, segregation and discrimination to lead an African American to the White House. 2. A reactionary (or “backward-looking”) America that responded to the election of the first black president with racist slogans, hanging imitations and other images of our country's most shameful and painful memories.

 Today, the U.S. is somewhere between these poles of hope and fear. Today, most people shun open racism when they recognize it. Yet our lives are far from post-racial : segregation and bias live on in many forms.

 President Obama is well aware of the racial issues that still exist in America, despite how far we’ve come.  As a result of this knowledge, he wrote and delivered the speech “A More Perfect Union”.  Let’s read this speech in order to understand the problem more clearly.  Annotate the speech as we go.  Ask yourself: What is the author’s purpose in writing this speech?
