Presentation transcript:

Community Hydrologic Prediction System (CHPS) Focus: Provide NWS RFCs with improved access to new science developed within the hydrologic community  replace the NWS’s old and increasingly un-maintainable software infrastructure used for RFC river forecasting operations  base on Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) concepts NWS CHPS Acceleration Team: Membership 4 NWS River Forecast Centers (California-Nevada, Northwest, Arkansas-Red Basin, North Central) NWS Office of Hydrologic Development’s Senior Scientist Role Provide ‘thought’ leadership and seek ways to advance CHPS Provide practical support for CHPS-related activities

CHPS Current activities CHPS FEWS Pilot Goal: demonstrate that FEWS can meet the needs of NWS river forecasting operations Based on WL | Delft’s Flood Early Warning System (FEWS) product, which is in operational use in several European countries Pilot system targeted for 3Q FY2007 at one RFC (site TBD); guidance and support will be provided by the CAT NWS subsequent assessment will determine if FEWS can provide the basic infrastructure for CHPS

CHPS Current activities (cont’d) ResSim Goal: collaborative effort to improve joint forecasting operations of the NWS CNRFC, the US Army Corps of Engineers, the Yuba County Water Agency, and the State of California Department of Water Resources  NWS: integrate the USACE’s Reservoir Simulation (ResSim) model into CNRFC operations Challenges: Solution must work with current NWS software infrastructure Solution must be ‘CHPS-ready’:  smooth migration to CHPS independent of selected infrastructure  extensible - other USACE HEC models easily added when needed
