Graphite Graphite is made up of carbon atoms. Chemical formula: C It is an allotrope of carbon. Ex. Graphite vs. Diamond Graphite has the same chemical composition as Diamond, the molecular structure of Graphite and Diamond is entirely different.
Graphite Color : silver gray to black Streak: grayish black Luster: metallic or earthy luster
Hardness : Graphite has a Mohs hardness number of between 1 and 2 *Greasy feel Cleavage: good, one direction
Magnetism: no Effervescence: no
Common Use 1.It is used in thermochemistry as the standard state for defining the heat of formation of carbon compounds. 2.Some golf clubs are made out of graphite. ==> lighter & further shots & more yards
Common Use 3.The Piano manufacturing process of wooden parts used to use graphite as a lubricant to reduce friction. 4. It is used to make the brushes for electric motors and generators. 5. it has wide use as an electrode in a number of applications, primarily batteries.
What do we use daily that contains graphite? PENCILS! The "lead" filling in pencils is in fact composed of a mixture of graphite and clay. If it was real lead, it would be very dangerous.
