CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM Ms. Kelly 7 th Grade Health

What is it? Body system that moves (“circulates”) blood from the heart to the lungs and the rest of the body Blood delivers oxygen and other nutrients to all body cells (in less than 60 seconds!!)

Cardiovascular Terms Blood Heart Arteries Veins Capillaries

Blood The conduit for gases, nutrients and waste products through the body Contains plasma, red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs) and platelets

Heart Muscle (about the size of your fist) that pumps blood to the lungs and to the rest of the body Every day the heart pumps about 1,800 gallons of blood through 75,000 miles of blood vessels!!!

Arteries Vessels that carry blood and nutrients AWAY from the heart Usually oxygenated blood

Veins Vessels that carry blood TOWARD the heart Usually de-oxygenated blood

Capillaries Smallest blood vessels in the body Oxygen diffuses across membrane into cells… carbon dioxide released as a waste product into blood

Pathway of Blood in the Heart
