Unit 1 – Tools of Geometry (Points, Lines and Planes) Learning TargetsAssessment Dates Assessment Name Assessment Score Assessment Weight Basic Definitions – I know precise definitions of a point, line, plane, collinear points, coplanar, segment, ray, opposite rays, midpoint, segment bisector, congruent segments, angle, sides, vertex, measure, obtuse, right, acute, congruent angles, different angle pairs, the Angle Addition Postulate, angle bisector. G.CO1 Vertical Angles – I know how to recognize vertical angles and their relationship to one another. G.CO9 Midpoint and Distance Formula – I know how to use the midpoint and distance formulas in the coordinate plane. G.GPE4; G.GPE6 Naming – I know how to name each of the following: a point, line, plane, collinear points, coplanar, segment, ray, and opposite rays. G.CO1 Postulate/Axiom – I know what these terms mean and how they are used in mathematics. G.CO1 Naming Intersections – I know how to name the intersections made between lines, planes, etc. G.CO1
1.2- Points, Lines, and Planes Point: indicates a location and has no size Naming Points: represented with a capital letter Line: a straight path that extends in two opposite directions forever; has infinitely many points; has no thickness Naming Lines: (1)choose any two points in any order, OR (2)use a lowercase letter Plane: a flat surface that extends without end and contains infininitely many lines—meaning it contains infinitely many points; has no thickness Naming Planes: (1)using a capital letter OR (2) using three different points in any order that are not collinear
Collinear: points that lie on the same line Coplanar: points and lines that lie on the same plane Segment: part of a line that consists of two endpoints and all points inbetween Naming a Segment: by the two endpoints of the segment in any order Ray: part of a line that contains one endpoint and all the points on one side of the endpoint Naming a Ray: first letter should be the endpoint, second letter is any other point on the line Opposite Rays: two rays that share the same endpoints and travel in opposite directions—forming a line Naming Opposite Rays: by the shared endpoint and another point on the ray
M A B C D E F G H J r 1.Say the slide is a plane, what are 3 names for it? 2.What are 3 different names for the line? 3.Name 3 different segments. 4.Name 3 different rays. 5.Name 3 pairs of opposite rays. 6.Name 3 collinear points
HUMAN GEOMETRY With your group, form a: Point Line What could we name this line? What points are collinear? Parallel lines Line segment How would we write the name of this segment? Ray How would we write the name of this ray? Opposite Rays What point is the center? Plane example with group and example in the room
