Chapter 9 Type 1: What does the word “organic” mean to you? What immediately comes to mind?
Chapter 9 What do the following items have in common?
CARBON !
Before we go any further into understanding how Carbon plays a role in each of these items, we need to understand two new terms first… Monomers- small molecules joined together to create a polymer. Polymer- large molecule that forms when many smaller molecules are linked together by covalent bonds.
Polymers can be classified as natural or synthetic In all living organisms, there are four very important natural polymers made of CARBON! – Carbohydrates – Proteins – Lipids – Nucleic Acids
Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates?
Carbohydrates- simple and complex sugars Monomer= Glucose Polymers= starches, cellulose
Proteins?
Proteins- polymer with at least 100 amino acid monomers linked through bonds Monomer= amino acids (22) Polymer= protein chain (polypeptide)
Lipids?
Lipids- fats, waxes, steroids Monomer= 3 fatty acid chains, 1 glycerol Polymer= triglyceride
Nucleic Acids?
Nucleic Acids- large nitrogen containing polymers found mainly in the nuclei of cells Monomer= nucleotides Polymer= DNA/ RNA strand
