Finding x-intercepts, Solving Equations and Solving Inequalities by Graphing

Finding x-intercepts Press Y= to input the equation we want to graph: Use Zoom #6 first, then you might wish to adjust the window to view the graph better.

Finding x-intercepts You may wish to adjust your window to see the upper points of the parabola that do not appear. Press WINDOW and make the adjustment for Ymax. Finding x-intercepts

Your graph should look something like this on the right. To find the “left” x- intercept, select 2 nd TRACE, Option #2: Zero. Then, press ENTER. A zero is the x-coordinate of the x-intercept on a graph. Finding x-intercepts

Now, your graph should look something like this on the right. To find the coordinates of the “left” x-intercept, navigate to the left of where x = -2, then press ENTER. The coordinates at the bottom of the screen need not be the same as these. Finding x-intercepts

Now, your graph should look something like this on the right. To find the coordinates of the “left” x-intercept, navigate to the left of where x = -2, then press ENTER. The coordinates at the bottom of the screen need not be the same as these. After pressing ENTER, you should notice “Right Bound” in the bottom left hand side of your viewing screen. Finding x-intercepts

Now, navigate to the right of where x = -2; this will take you above the x-axis. Then press ENTER twice. The x-intercept is approximately (-1.74,0). Finding x-intercepts

1.Press TRACE. 2.Navigate right so the cursor on the curve just to the “left” of the next intercept (this time above the x-axis). 3.Press 2 nd TRACE, Option #2: Zero. 4.Press ENTER. 5.Navigate to the “right” of the x-intercept (now below the x- axis). 6.Press ENTER twice. 7.The other x-intercept is approximately (5.74,0). Finding the “right” x-intercept
