Advice / Advise INCORRECT: He refused to take my advise. CORRECT: He refused to take my advice. Advise is a verb. The s has the sound of “z”. Advice is a noun. The c has the sound of “s”.

All right / Alright INCORRECT: Thankfully, he was alright after his fall. CORRECT: Thankfully, he was all right after his fall. Although there are many arguments for the acceptance of the word alright, it is still widely regarded as non- standard. Careful writers avoid using it.

Every day / Everyday INCORRECT: Dan walks his dog everyday at six p.m. CORRECT: Dan walks his dog every day at six p.m. Everyday is an adjective that means “daily”, whereas every day is a phrase that combines the adjective every with the noun day. E.g. Walking the dog is an everyday occurrence. I practice the flute every day.

 To spell a word that you don’t know, first consider its meaning. There might be parts of it that you are familiar with. Break the word into syllables and see if this helps. Perhaps you know a similar word that you can use to work out the meaning of this word.

 For you to learn a new word, you might have to first look at it and familiarise yourself it. Next, say the word; then hide the word from view; and say the word as you are writing it. Finally, check to see if the word is correct. This is a learning procedure known as LOOK, SAY, COVER, WRITE, CHECK.

 Search for patterns in alien words, such as recognisable suffixes or prefixes. For example, the prefix ‘dis’ is usually used to make a word negative. ‘Advantage’ turns negative when it becomes ‘Disadvantage’ SOURCE:
