CENTURY 21 ACCOUNTING © 2009 South-Western, Cengage Learning JOURNALIZING WRITING OFF AN UNCOLLECTIBLE ACCOUNT RECEIVABLE Canceling the balance of a customer account because the customer does not pay is called writing off an account In order to write off an account, Allowance for Uncollectible Accounts is debited and Account Receivable is credited The book value of accounts receivable is the same both before and after writing off an uncollectible account. Why? Because the same amount is deducted from both the accounts receivable and the allowance accounts. Remember, losses from an uncollectible account is an expense to a business 2 LESSON 17-2
