Multiplying/Dividing Fractions How do we multiply fractions? That’s very easy, we multiply the numerators together and the denominators together. Example How about dividing fractions? We find the reciprocal of the second number. We can “flip” it and then multiply. Example
Reciprocals So, what actually is a reciprocal? A reciprocal is a number’s inverse. It’s opposite. This is calculated by doing the following… What is the reciprocal of 4? Easy, right? The reciprocal (otherwise known as inverse) makes a large number smaller.
Reciprocals A “small” number gets bigger, right? Simply, if you think of a number as a fraction, it just flips to its opposite. Let’s try a larger number.
Reciprocals Find the reciprocal of 100. If you haven’t figured it out already, reciprocal and inverse mean the same thing. We will learn more about this in chapter 2. (This will not be tested yet.)

Negativity The reciprocal finds the inverse of a number’s weight only. It ignores the negative symbol completely. Example So the inverse of a negative number is also negative. And the inverse of a positive number is also positive.
