IMPACT OF WOMEN IN ACTION FILMS

INTRODUCTION “It's long been accepted in popular culture that that the traditional "action film" is the gender-reversed mirror image of the "chick flick": a film made by men, starring men, for men.” (Meslow)

THESIS For centuries men have largely dominated in the action film genre while women have played stereotypical, often sexist roles. Over the past few centuries however, women’s roles in action films has gradually shifted due to many social and economic factors. This has had a direct impact over social issues and continues to raise important issues.

FACTORS Money Changing Values New Ideas Audience

“The modern depiction is significant, because it illustrates that toughness and action are not exclusive to men and that women who punch, kick, and drive fast cars can be just as cool as men who do those things. The popularity of female action heroes in the new millennium is undeniable: soaring box office receipts, fast-selling merchandise, and increasing numbers of films starring strong women speak loudly that they accepted and in demand.” -Gladys L. Knight (Female Action Heroes: A Guide to Women in Comics, Videos Games, Film, and Television)

ISSUES Sexualizing Body Image Women Independence Pay Gap

CONCLUSION “In addition to surpassing profit expectation and breaking box office records, these women spark controversy and debate, changing the real world as well as reflecting how gender roles have changed. Action continues to be one of the most lucrative genres across all media forms, and as such, it plays a prominent role in shaping society, providing role models, for young women and girls, and addressing myriad issues relevant to society.” -Gladys L. Knight (Female Action Heroes: A Guide to Women in Comics, Videos Games, Film, and Television)
