Problem Description The general U.S. population is not very familiar with the countries of the world A simple GUI based program is proposed to present an easier way for children to learn about the many nations of the world

Problem Description The program will provide information in 3 ways: World Individual Countries Country Comparison

Intended Uses and Users Uses Introduction to world geography Teaching tool for parents and school teachers Quick reference for general country facts Users Children age 9 – 12 Parents School teachers

Platform, Language, & Development Compatible with Windows 9x, 2000, ME System requirements (tested) –266 MHz, 64 MB RAM Programmed in Visual Basic Estimated size: lines Total project workload: 450 hours

Program Concept References books can be burdensome and awkward to handle Digital encyclopedias can be hard to navigate and contain unneeded information Web based geography can be difficult to find and confusing to follow GLOBEY’s World will provide a simple, locally installed option for learning

Program Functionality: Overview The program will use three tabbed pages to give information to the user:  World Page – World map for selecting countries  Country Page – Basic country information  Comparison Page – Compare different countries GLOBEY – Program assistant that will explain the program’s features

Program Functionality: Standard Features 1.GLOBEY Cartoon character of a globe Describes features of the page when user clicks on GLOBEY –Will display a text box and play a sound file

Program Functionality: Standard Features 2.Menu Bar Exit Hide/Unhide GLOBEY Sound On/Off

Program Functionality: Standard Features 3.Navigation Tabs World Page Country Page Comparison Page –These tabs will be used to move throughout the three program pages

Program Functionality: World Page 1.World Map Allows user to select a country for more information User zooms in on a continent by clicking on it Countries are displayed in higher detail for selection When a country is selected by clicking on it, the country will be highlighted

Program Functionality: World Page 2.GLOBEY When a country is selected, GLOBEY displays and speaks its name 3.Country Select Menu Pulldown menu for selecting country After selection, world map will zoom into continent view

Assumptions Users will only need basic information User is familiar with basic Windows operations (mouse, keyboard, etc.) The system running the program meets all requirements

Limitations Only a limited amount of information will be available The program will not have the ability to be readily updated The graphics will have a limited quality There is a limited display area

Design Constraints Simple appearance and functionality for younger users Image quality vs. Program size Limited image display area

End Product Description GLOBEY’s World will be a simple graphical program which will enable children to learn more about the countries of the world.
