Strategic Planning: Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) Strategic Planning Committee Open Forum

Definitions: Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) During the Strategic Planning Committee’s Open Forum in January, the following definitions were presented: Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) KPIs are measures that are monitored to determine the health, effectiveness and efficiency of an organization. KPIs help the organization think strategically about itself and its environment. KPIs are specific, objective measures that tell an organization if it is accomplishing its goals. Quantitative KPIs reflect the results of a large, statistically significant sample Qualitative KPIs provide in-depth information on a small sample of a larger population Based on the work of Michael Dolence

Background: How KPIs were developed The KPIs were developed by sub-committees consisting of members of the Strategic Planning Committee and representatives from the campus community. The presentation of KPIs on the web and in packets that were mailed include a description of the KPI a ranking of the KPI to indicate its level of importance and the amount of effort required to track it the type and/or location of data that will be used to track it the offices responsible for tracking and/or reporting the data and a timeline for reporting

Example of information included with KPIs

Forum Purpose: Response to KPIs We are happy to present to you the first draft of these KPIs for your review and feedback. The committee recognizes that the number of KPIs is large and that some will need to be eliminated in order to facilitate accurate tracking and analysis as we strive to achieve our strategic priority goals. Which KPIs are the most critical to our future success? Which KPIs could be eliminated? Are any essential KPIs missing? Are KPIs ranked appropriately (in terms of effort and impact)?

Questions or Comments Thank you for attending today’s forum. For more information, to provide your comments, or to take an anonymous survey on which KPIs should be included or omitted from the Strategic Plan, visit the SCSU Strategic Planning Web site at:
