NEES Cyberinfrastructure Center at the San Diego Supercomputer Center, UCSD George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation An Online Education Game Young Researchers Symposium Oregon, August 11, 2006 Yoshiko Tsunehara

NEES Cyberinfrastructure Center at the San Diego Supercomputer Center, UCSD George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation Overview  Background on NEESit Education, Outreach, & Training (EOT)  Project Goal: Develop interactive web-based educational tool  Current Status of game and site development  Future production of lessons and homework assignments

NEES Cyberinfrastructure Center at the San Diego Supercomputer Center, UCSD George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation NEES Cyberinfrastructure Center (NEESit) Based at the San Diego Supercomputer Center, NEESit is a service-focused organization created to deliver information technology tools and infrastructure to enable earthquake engineers to remotely participate in experiments, perform hybrid simulations, organize and share data, and collaborate with colleagues. To help further NEESinc’s vision for outreach, NEESit decided to focus on its information technology specialization to develop an online center for education.

NEES Cyberinfrastructure Center at the San Diego Supercomputer Center, UCSD George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation NEESit EOT Activities Feedback from teachers at TeacherTECH seminar:  Homework assignments for students after in-class hands-on activity

NEES Cyberinfrastructure Center at the San Diego Supercomputer Center, UCSD George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation Project Goals  Develop interactive web-based educational tool for students and teachers  Project Tasks  Earthquake Engineering game  Scientific information for teachers  Homework assignments

NEES Cyberinfrastructure Center at the San Diego Supercomputer Center, UCSD George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation Research  California Teaching Standards  Already existing sites  Crosswords, quizzes, stories, etc  FAQs and Info  Glossary  TLC’s Make a Quake For a complete list of researched links, please ask after the presentation

NEES Cyberinfrastructure Center at the San Diego Supercomputer Center, UCSD George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation Problems with Existing Games  TLC game not user friendly, poor user interface, not for children  Crosswords and quizzes are decent learning tools, but could be better  Very little focus on engineering  Few materials specifically for teachers

NEES Cyberinfrastructure Center at the San Diego Supercomputer Center, UCSD George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation Tools Used  Macromedia  Flash Professional 8  Dreamweaver 8  Fireworks 8  Adobe  Illustrator  Photoshop  Programming  Flash ActionScript  CSS  Html

NEES Cyberinfrastructure Center at the San Diego Supercomputer Center, UCSD George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation Game Development  Developed storyboard of game  Method of interactivity  Flash  What selections should be available  Science behind game  Decision Tree  Simulation Ending  Video of shaking buildings  Text Results  Related Homework Assignment

NEES Cyberinfrastructure Center at the San Diego Supercomputer Center, UCSD George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation Presenting: QuakeShake!  Game title: Quake Shake  Three buildings of three different heights  Relates to Activity 2: Natural Frequency Experiment  3 Soil Types: Rock, Sand, Clay  2 Foundation Types: Shallow, Deep Pile  Earthquake Specs: Acceleration, Frequency, Duration  Ending animation Preview of the game in web and flash format

NEES Cyberinfrastructure Center at the San Diego Supercomputer Center, UCSD George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation Education Website  Part of NEESit website  Main feature is QuakeShake game  Student Portal  Homework Sets  Earthquake FAQ, topics, terminology, etc. designed for students  Links  Teacher Portal  Homework Solutions  Earthquake Science & Engineering info, including game concepts, designed for teachers  Links  About the Creators

NEES Cyberinfrastructure Center at the San Diego Supercomputer Center, UCSD George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation Status  Current:  Still developing QuakeShake game  Designing website layout  Future:  Content for website  Homework sets  Feedback  Continuous development and improvement

NEES Cyberinfrastructure Center at the San Diego Supercomputer Center, UCSD George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation Questions?  Feedback? Suggestions?  Message Yoshiko for list of education links  Be on the look-out for Education appearing on the NEESit website!

NEES Cyberinfrastructure Center at the San Diego Supercomputer Center, UCSD George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation Thank you!
