Global Hazard Patterns: Hazards and Climate Change in the East Midlands Today we will: Explore the main hazards which have affected the East Midlands in the past and consider future risks. Consider the potential impacts of Global Warming in the Local Area. Explore a range of supporting examples.

Test Log-on with your QUIA log-in and password details. As soon as you log in the time starts to count down. You have 14 minutes as you would have in the exam so use it wisely! World at Risk TEST 1:

Local Natural Hazards Report Task: In the instructions and weblinks to help you produce a report on local natural hazards in the East Midlands. You must complete this by next week. Cover: – at least 3 different natural hazards which have affected the East Midlands –frequency/damage –examples

Possible Impacts of Climate Change on UK - Health Cold-related winter deaths decrease by as much as 20,000 per year. Heat-related summer deaths increase to around 2,800 per year Cases of food poisoning increase by about 10,000 cases per year Vector-borne/water-borne diseases increase (impact is likely to be small) Indigenous malaria could re-establish by 2050 The risk of major disasters caused by gales and coastal flooding increases significantly Effects of air pollutants on health decline, but effects of summer ozone increase

We have already looked at how Global Warming may impact the world but what about directly the UK? Watch the following explanation and list as many effects of Global warming in the UK on your worksheet. Reminder- Sir click on the interactive content part on the left!!: Read the hand out “Climate change and effects on Britain” and complete 1 st box on your worksheet. Now read the booklet Top 100 effects of Global warming booklet and identify which ones could effect Britain- some amazing facts in this! Add these to your table.

Independent Study (Homework) Complete your report by the end of next week. Remember this can be asked as an exam question. Revise any areas you found difficult in the test. Start to input hazards into your hazard log table (you have been ed this). Use and to find the information but also watch the news and use the news clippings service in the library.
