The Town Has to Decide Read the passage quickly and find out the main sentences that show us whether the two speakers are for or against building a McDonald’s restaurant in their town. FOR: I was excited when… I can see nothing but good if… Against: I am very worried about McDonald’s… I also worry about all those cars… So when I consider…, I think we should not …

The Town Has to Decide Reasons for building a McDonald’s: 1. It will provide food that is of high quality, safe and healthy. 2. It means more work for our area that needs jobs badly. They make a promise to the people that work for them. They say, “We value you, your growing skills and your help to the company. 3. They will be concerned about providing parking for the cars in our main street.

The Town Has to Decide Reasons against building a McDonald’s: 1. The food served in it contains high levels of fat, sugar and salt. 2.There are problems with too many cars bringing people to buy food in McDonald’s: (1). They will produce petrol fumes. (2). They slow down the traffic. 3. There are problems with all the food containers. 4. They don’t allow employees to join a Union to speak up for them.

Find out the sentences with similar meaning as the following ones in the passage: 1.It is certain that it will provide more work for our area where jobs are in great need. 2.Many of our young people will be very very happy to work for it. 3. I can only find benefits if this company comes to build its restaurant in our town. 4. McDonald’s doesn’t help young people know what a healthy diet should be.

Pay attention to the following sentences: 1.McDonald’s care about healthy eating too and works with scientists to provide food that is of high quality, safe and healthy. 2. They often provide salads as well as burgers and chips. 3. They make a promise to people that work for them. 4. I am not sure if McDonald’s food is as healthy as they say in their advertisements.

5. I wonder if it is made or brought in from elsewhere. 6.Although it is freshly cooked, it must be less healthy than our own locally grown and cooked Chinese food. 7.Will they be treated fairly? 8. In America, McDonald’s does not allow Unions to operate in its restaurants and these are people who speak up for the workers. 9. If,as they say, the workers are happy with them why should they fear some workers joining a Union?
