Personality Types Behavior Types Communication Styles

Passive o When someone holds back their ideas, feelings, and decisions o People with passive behavior typically lack self-confidence, make excuses, and avoid sharing feelings and/or making decisions

Aggressive o When someone uses words or actions that are disrespectful towards others o People with aggressive behavior might interrupt others or dominate a conversation o They might call others names and/or make sarcastic remarks o They typically threaten others because they lack self-confidence

Assertive o When someone honestly and respectfully expresses their ideas, feelings, and decisions without worrying about what others think o People with assertive behavior are self- confident and show others that they are in control of themselves

Decision Making Styles

Inactive When a person fails to make choices HABITS… o Postpone something until a future time o PROCRASTINATE o Take little control of the direction of their lives o Have difficulty gaining self-confidence

Reactive When a person allows others to make his/her decisions HABITS… o Easily influenced by what others think o They give control of the direction of their lives to others o They lack self-confidence and have a great need to be liked by others

Proactive When a person makes a decision using the “Responsible Decision-Making Model” HABITS… o Not easily influenced by peers o Has control over his/her own life o They have principles which help guide their decisions

Responsible Decision-Making Model o Describe the situation that requires a decision o List the possible decisions you can make o Share the list with a trusted adult o Evaluate the consequences of each possible decision Is it healthy? Confrontation o When a person attempts to settle a disagreement in a hostile, disrespectful manner o They want to win or be right o They view a conflict as “win-lose” o They believe that their side is the only one worth considering o This is an example of aggressive behavior

Resolution o When a person uses “conflict- resolution” skills to resolve a problem o They remain rational and in control o They listen to the other person’s side o They see the potential for a “win-win” solution or compromise o This is an example of assertive behavior

How to Use Conflict- Resolution Skills o Remain Calm o Set a Positive Tone (avoid placing blame, put- downs, and threats) o Define and then Describe the Conflict o Take Responsibility for Personal Actions o Listen to the Needs and Feelings of Others o List and Evaluate Possible Solutions o Agree on a Solution

Seven Building Blocks of Good Character o COMPASSION – showing sensitivity to others o GOOD CITIZENSHIP – obeying laws and respecting authority o FAIRNESS – abiding by the rules and not taking advantage of others o RESPECT – treating others the way you want to be treated o RESPONSIBILITY – doing what you promise; being accountable o TRUSTWORTHINESS – being dependable and loyal o HONESTY – refusing to lie, steal, or mislead someone
