Soft Skills Work Experience

Conflict Resolution The Chinese symbol for conflict combines two Chinese characters. One character denotes danger and the other opportunity. Conflict contains both of these elements. Too often the focus of conflict is on danger and people fail to see the opportunities hidden within the conflict. But if conflict is effectively managed, it can provide some positive productive opportunities.

Conflict Resolution Since conflict naturally emerges in nearly all group situations, learning how to manage and resolve conflict is an important skill. When was the last time you found yourself in a conflict at work? How did it get resolved? This is how NOT to resolve a conflict!

Conflict Resolution Conflict naturally emerges in nearly all group situations. Since resolving conflict is such an important skill, we are going to look at five conflict styles. You need to figure out your style of handling conflict and consider other approaches that you may want to use. The ability to deal with conflict is one of the most important skills you will need in your personal as well as professional life.

Thomas & Kilman Conflict Resolution Styles

Five Conflict Resolution Styles COMPETING ~ Assertive & uncooperative – You try to satisfy your own concerns at your teammate’s expense. 1 COLLABORATING ~ Assertive & cooperative – You try to find a win-win solution that completely satisfies both you and your teammate. 2 COMPROMISING ~ Intermediately assertive & cooperative – You try to find an acceptable settlement that only partially satisfies your concerns and those of your teammate. 3 AVOIDING ~ Unassertiveness & uncooperative – You side step the conflict without trying to satisfy your concerns or those of your teammate. 4 ACCOMMODATING ~ Unassertiveness cooperative – You attempt to satisfy your teammate’s concerns at the expense of your own. 5

Conflict Resolution A B C D E Whitney tries to solve problems by denying their existence. She prefers to ignore the issue and hopes it will go away. A Jim gives up on something and plays down his differences with Lamar. Jim is agreeable and cooperative buy often resentful. B Adrienne is determined to win at all costs. She often uses her position of authority to get her way. C Malcolm and Brooke respect each other’s abilities, values and expertise. They each present and listen to the other’s position. D Mary is willing to give up something in order to meet Trent midway. She is both assertive and cooperative. E This is another option for an Overview slide.

What is your conflict resolutions style? COMPETING COLLABORATING COMPROMISING AVOIDING ACCOMMODATING

REMEMBER Employers want people with good interpersonal skills. That includes the ability to handle and resolve conflict. Make sure you are able to recount a conflict you resolved that showed your maturity and ability to stay calm when faced with a difficult situation!
