Living Things and Their Needs

structure A specific part of a living thing.

climate The typical weather conditions for a place over time.

shelter A place in which animals can stay safe.

soil A mixture of tiny rock particles, minerals, and decayed plant and animal matter.

humus A substance made up of broken-down plant and animal material.

environment Everything that surrounds a living thing.

biome An area of land or water that has certain kinds of living and nonliving things.

adaptation A special trait that helps living things survive in their environment.

Biomes desert mountains coast valley

Non Living Things

Shelters A place where animals can stay safe.

Roots take in water and nutrients from the soil. They also keep a plant in its place. Leaves take in carbon dioxide from the air. They use energy from the Sun to change carbon dioxide and water into food for the plant. Stems carry food and water throughout the plant. Stems also keep a plant upright so leaves can get sunlight.

Animals Need: water shelter oxygen energy from food

Plants Need: sunlight water carbon dioxide energy from food
