STUDENT EMOTIONS What emotions do you students experience each day?
WHAT ARE EMOTIONS Emotions are relatively short-term responses that: 1.Are evoked by real or imagined stimuli or “trigger”. 2.Cause shifts in subjective experiences (thinking and feeling). 3.Lead to changes in physiology (brain chemicals, heart rate). 4.Produce a change in facial expressions, body language, and vocal tones. 5.Motivate behavior (fight/flight, approach/avoid)
THE FUNCTION OF EMOTIONS Emotions influence: A. Attention, memory, and learning B. Decision making and judgment C. Relationship quality D. Physical and mental health
THE LANGUAGE OF EMOTION 1.Emotions are relatively short-term experiences that are focused on a specific target or cause (“I am angry at the way you just treated me.”). 2.Feelings are subjective private experiences about emotions (“I feel sick to my stomach about what I said earlier.”). 3.Moods are less intense emotions that are longer induration and may not have identifiable cause (“I’m in a good mood today.”). 4.Trait effect is where you “live most of the time” on the Mood Meter. (“I am positive person.”).
WHAT IS EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE Recognizing emotions in self and others Understanding the causes and consequences of emotions Labeling emotions accurately Expressing emotions appropriately Regulating emotions effectively
WHY? Students Have less anxiety and depression Are less likely to abuse drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes Have greater leadership skills Are more attentive and less hyperactive in school Perform better academically Teachers Are more positive about learning Receive more support from their Principals Report greater job satisfaction Are less stressed at school
WHAT ARE SOME TYPICAL CLASSROOM AND SCHOOL RULES ?
BUILDING A FACULTY CHARTER In your groups: 1.Choose a facilitator 2.Choose a recorder for your group 3.Use active listening skills, acknowledge team members’ contributions, and manage time effectively. A.How do you want to feel in school each day? On your own, list the 5-10 feelings you want to experience each day at school. As a team, combine your lists so that you have a maximum of 8 distinct feelings. For example, your discussion should be about which of these three feelings is most important to the group.
BUILDING A FACULTY CHARTER CONT’D B.What will we do to have these feelings consistently and create a positive learning environment? In your teams, describe what each of these feelings will “look like” in terms of measurable or observable behaviors in school. Think about what you will do each day or week to ensure everyone experiences these feelings. You should end up with at least one behavior for each feeling. Note: Your responses should be in the form of a SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely. For example, for appreciated, “being nice to each other” is not SMART, but “greeting each other using names and positive nonverbal behavior” is SMART.
BUILDING A FACULTY CHARTER CONT’D C. How will we prevent and manage conflict and unwanted feelings? As a team, think about the uncomfortable feelings and unwanted behaviors you would like to avoid experiencing in school. Then, discuss and describe how you will handle these feelings and behaviors, including how you will prevent and manage conflict. Note: Behaviors should be in the form of SMART goals. For example, agreeing to disagree is not SMART, but providing 10 minutes in each faculty meeting to problem to problem solve about a challenging student is SMART. 1.The uncomfortable feelings and unwanted behaviors we would like to avoid at school are:? 2.We will prevent and manage conflict and unwanted feelings by: 3.What was important about developing a Charter in your groups? 4.How will developing Charters enhance both classroom and school climate as well as student learning?
PRESENTING YOUR CHARTER 1. Each group will be required to share their Charter. 2.Use a creative method in creating your charter (Examples: Singing your Charter to the Fresh Prince of Bel Air Intor, Charter Town). Be Creative we are an ARTS school!
COMBINING THE 7 CHARTERS INTO 1 As a whole group, we will work together to create one charter for the entire Faculty.
