Ms. Giorgi and Mrs. Garcia Spring Intersession 2016

Myths  Myths are usually about gods, goddesses, or supernatural beings with greater powers and abilities than humans.  A long time ago, myths were thought to be true by their original tellers.  We still enjoy reading about them today and many have been turned into book series and movies. They are also the subjects of famous paintings.  We will be reading the myth “Theseus and the Minotaur”

Who do you know?  Greek mythology is made up of many characters. Sometimes it’s hard to know who did what!  Basically, they are broken down into groups…  The Olympian gods and goddesses – the next few slides will explain who they are!  The Titans – Cronus, Hyperion, Oceanus, Phoebe to name a few.  Greek heroes –Achilles, Perseus, Theseus  Mythical creatures – The Minotaur, Gorgons, Hydra, Chimera, Pegasus, etc.

Heroes of Mt. Olympus –Who lived on Mt. Olympus?  Zeus – Hera’s husband, Ruler of all the gods and goddesses on Mt. Olympus  Hera – Zeus’ wife, goddess of marriage, symbolized by the peacock and the pomegranate  Aphrodite – goddess of love  Artemis- goddess of hunting and nature  Athena – goddess of the arts, literature and reason  Apollo – god of music, light, healing and was thought to give medicine to humans  Hestia – goddess of the home, hearth (fire)  Hermes – god of commerce, he was quick and clever and the protector of travelers and athletes (look at the wings on his feet… what is the symbol on Puentes track shirts?)  Hades – Ruler of the underworld  Hephaestus – god of fire and volcanoes  Aris – god of war  Poseidon – god of the sea

Poseidon Wings on his feet
