Semicolons and Colons

1. Semicolon Use a semicolon to join parts of a compound sentence if no coordinating conjunction is used (a stronger connection is shown than with a comma and conjunction) Bonita is good at set shots; I am not.

With commas: use a semicolon between independent clauses joined by a conjunction if the clause before the conjunction contains commas We put out sandwiches, cider, raw vegetables, and potato salad; and still wondered if there would be enough to eat.

When there are commas within parts of a series, use a semicolon to separate the parts. Maris was in charge of scenery; Roy, the costumes; and Felipe, the directing.

Use a semicolon before a conjunctive adverb or a parenthetical expression that join the clauses of a compound sentence. Many of their talents complemented each other; for example, he played the piano and she sang.

Semicolon Practice 1. Learning is not child’s play we cannot learn without pain. 2. Books swept me away, this way and that I made endless vows according to their lights, for I believed them. 3. Mama had not been consulted therefore, she made no comment. 4. Jim had done research, taken notes, and made an outline but he didn’t feel ready to begin writing.

2. Colon Use a colon to introduce a list of items (it often follows a word or phrase like these, the following, or as follows) We visited these countries on our trip: Switzerland, France, Spain, and Italy.

DO NOT use a colon after a verb, because, as, or after a prepositional phrase INCORRECT: Mike is interested in: chemistry, photography, and ice hockey. CORRECT: These are Mike’s interests: chemistry, photograph, and ice hockey.

Use a colon to introduce a quotation that lacks explanatory words such as he said or she asked Christine wheeled around angrily: “You’re going to regret this!” Use a colon to introduce a very long or very formal quotation. In his Inaugural Address, President John Kennedy said: “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.”

Use a colon between two independent clauses when the second explains the first Then I knew we were in trouble: none of our boys could match the dive we had just seen.
