Gap Inc. uses child slavery By: Chris and Blake

The working conditions They have to work over 100 hours a week Employers could set wages as low as they wanted because people were willing to do work as long as they got paid. People worked fourteen to sixteen hours a day for six days a week The only light present was the sunlight that came through the windows. Machines spit out smoke and in some factories, workers came out covered in black soot by the end of the day. There were a plethora of machines with not many safety precautions. This resulted in many accidents. The workers only received a break for lunch and a break for dinner

The causes of child labor With little or no access to schooling, children are forced into employment at an early age in order to survive. Children are also expected to act as unpaid domestic servants in their own home, taking care of the family's needs while both parents work Parents may effectively "sell" their children in order to repay debts or secure a loan Young workers are unaware of their rights and less likely to complain or revolt

The effects on the children as a result of the working conditions Physical injuries and mutilations are caused by badly maintained machinery in factories Exhaustion and malnutrition are a result of underdeveloped children performing heavy manual labor, working long hours in unbearable conditions and not earning enough to feed themselves Long-term health problems, such as respiratory disease, asbestosis and a variety of cancers, are common in countries where children are forced to work with dangerous chemicals

How the government dealt with child labor and laws on child labor The government did not aid or assist with the child labor that was going on at that time. The companies continued to use children as workers in the factories and many deaths continued happening over time Later on there were rules put in place that children age 10+ were only allowed to work, as well as a limit of how many hours they were allowed to work. That enabled the children to not die of exhaustion.

Similarities between the industrial revolution’s child labor and the GAP’s child labor There are laws regarding how many hours allowed to work, type of machinery allowed to operate. In the industrial revolution, you could hire kids of any age. Work them as many hours as you wanted, physical threaten and abuse them. Minimum wage laws also apply to working children. There was no minimum wage back then. Or overtime pay. Most of them did not get paid they just got a roof over their head and feeding

Differences between the industrial revolution’s child labor and the GAP’s child labor The gap was just in factories making clothing and the industrial revolution was in mills mining, and agriculture children were defined under the age of sixteen. The industrial revolution made more kids die because all the dieses that they got in the mine.

Some solutions to deal with child labor People could make more adults or make machines to do all the work. People need to fight for the children’s right. There are many ways to join in the fight to end child labor injustices whichever method you chose, know that know that you are making a difference and helping to make the a better place. And if there is more school in the world which kids would attend more school then more kid would be forced to do child labor. Union and community organizing, free education for all children campaigns to change public opinion, and universal minimum standards
