Sequence pretest Read the following paragraph: Sam just couldn't stand the thought of all those cats never having a chance to find a new home so he quietly climbed out of his bedroom window and rode his bike to the pound. After carefully picking the lock on the gate, he stood aside as the cats walked out, one by one. The sleek black one with enormous, green shiny eyes was the leader. He told his followers to stay in line, don't look back, don't meow, and walk like a king. The last cat was the youngest one, and he did not follow directions. He stopped and looked back. His heart was breaking-he hadn't finished his dinner. The gray cat in front of him stopped and told him in a no-nonsense manner to get in line and follow the leader. After the cats exited, the gate to the animal shelter slammed shut! Sam sped off on his bike with a huge grin, climbed back in his bedroom window, and tiptoed to bed.

Last Tuesday I met my new friend Mickey. We were both in a ball game at recess. I told him he had made a good catch during the game. Later that day we played in a softball game. We were on the same team and we won!

After the game, we traded some baseball cards, and then he said he wanted to ask me something. After he finished talking, we walked to the bus stop.

The next morning, I was able to answer his question. My parents said that I would go to his family’s apartment to have dinner with him on his birthday, December 6.
