Qualitative Analysis Coexistence, Midwives & Peace in the Middle East: Delivering Partnership & Understanding By Jessica Nan

Outline Israeli Survey Analysis Interviews Palestinian Survey Analysis

Israeli Survey Analysis Reasons for Participating Strengths Weaknesses Suggestions for the Future

Reasons for Participating For Peace  Over half of the participants explicitly explained their desires to actively bring about peace. To Meet the Palestinian Midwives  Motivated by the political situation to interact with Palestinian participants  A few wanted the interaction for the sake of exchanging knowledge and practices

Strengths Communication  Dedication of Skilled Israeli Midwives  One expressed the excitement, hope, and dreams of the group that was, “…very committed to building something meaningful and extended and long term,” (Interview 2).

Weaknesses Palestinian Group’s Lack of Dedication  Inconsistency in attendance and high turnover rate  Suspected different motivations for attending project Unclear Goals and Lack of Focus

Suggestions for the Future Working Together on a Specific Project  Ex: birth center  Hands-on learning experiences while the midwives get to know each other Research, Guidelines, and Conferences

Palestinian Survey Analysis Reasons for Participating Strengths Weaknesses Suggestions for the Future

Reasons for Participating Professional Exchange and Advancement  Strictly professional and educational  Definitely not for political reasons

Strengths Eagerness to Work Together and Learn Unity of Purpose of Palestinian Midwives

Weaknesses Communication  No  No direct communication between the Palestinian and Israeli participants, except at joint meetings Obstacles  Midwives too busy  Limiting and confining policies

Suggestions for the Future Additional Source: “Preliminary Recommendations…” of Preliminary Results of Qualitative Interviews: Palestinian Participants Widen Participation to International Level Relevancy of COHI Activities to Palestinian Needs More Joint Meetings
