Tobacco Lawsuits By: Emily and Julia

Recent Tobacco Lawsuits Juries across the country have started to hold the cigarette industry responsible for their actions. In October, 2002, a Los Angeles jury issued a $28 billion punitive damages award (later reduced by a judge to $28 million) against Philip Morris. In June 2002, a Miami jury held three cigarette companies liable for $37.5 million in a tobacco lawsuit involving an ex–smoker who lost his tongue to tobacco–related oral cancer.

General Information Over the past 50 years, the true facts about the health risks of cigarette smoking were hidden from the public. Cigarette smoking is now the single largest preventable cause of premature death in the United States. Smoking cigarettes causes chronic lung diseases, heart attacks and strokes. Millions of people suffer from smoking–related illnesses. Nearly one in every five deaths in the United States is smoking related, and tobacco use results in annual medical costs of more than $75 billion.

Song Lyrics –CHORUS –Smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette –Puff, puff, puff until you smoke yourself to death. –Tell St. Peter at the Golden Gate –That you hate to make him wait, –But you just gotta have another cigarette This song is a popular song in the 1980’s. This shows how popular smoking was.
